Putting together the perfect look takes a dedicated team of professionals who plan out everything from your hair to your underpinnings and everything in between. Each award season I’m part of a joint collaboration about the overall look and how the perfect nail completes it… While the main component of the look is always the dress, accessories such as jewelry and clutches are extremely important when curating the perfect red carpet photograph.
On the 2016 Golden Globes red carpet one color reigned supreme – or do I say a lack of a color? Yup, NUDE! A perfect nude nail is not only classic but also glamorous and not as easy as you may think to achieve the right one. Unlike the coral, almond shaped nail look I created for Cate Blanchett in the movie Carol, in collaboration with Makeup Artist, Morag Ross, for the Globes I kept her nail style a bit more subtle (like the custom french manicure, I created for a couple scenes at the end of the movie) . I wanted the nail color to be semi-opague and warm, so I chose to layer Dior’s Muguet and Ruban to achieve the exact nail color & tone I wanted. The beigey-pink combo was the perfect compliment to the fringed, Givenchy Haute Couture 1920’s style gown and her fabulous little tortoise shell and pink leather box clutch.
But Cate wasn’t the only one to go nude on the red carpet last night. Lady Gaga’s classic Hollywood style was accented by nude, almond shaped nails, giving her glamorous look a bit of an edge.
And while her husband’s odd hair may have stolen the couple’s thunder on social media (it’s apparently for an upcoming role), Jenna Dewan Tatum’s natural, french manicure, stole my heart. With the bling kept to her navy embellished dress, a natural nail was the perfect choice.
Other nudies on the carpet include Jennifer Lawrence, Jada Pinket-Smith, Sophia Bush and Zendaya. Discuss their hair, their make-up, the age appropriate-ness of their dresses all you like, but no one can disagree that a perfect natural nail was the best choice for all these looks.
While nude may have won, there were many manicures that still deserved a nomination. Jennifer Lopez’s mustard dress was a departure from the star’s normally blinged out look. Sexy and perfect on the ageless beauty, she accented the yellow color with Loreal’s ‘Always a Lady’ and complimentary clutch. The manicure popped and really helped create a stunning look.
Other nominees in the Bordeux nail category, included award show favorites, Orange is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling and How to Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis.
While you may have not walked away with a Globe last night, you can still be a winner. I’m giving away the two Dior Vernis nail colors (value $54) that I used to create Cate Blanchett’s red carpet nail look, so that you too can have red carpet worthy nails!!
